FAQs

  • What is fine art photography?

Fine art photography is a way of describing the style of how a photograph uses lighting, and how it is edited. This style of photo is generally lit with a soft kind of lighting that produces a painting like effect, giving a classic, timeless feel to the images that never goes out of style.

Equine and dog portraits work particularly well using this kind of light, producing beautiful results.

  • Is this kind of portrait for me?

If you want an original piece of art you can admire in years to come, yes. If you want a statement, physical framed print to show off your portraits in the best possible way, yes. You are more than welcome to get into the frame too - this is encouraged! Capturing the special bond between your animal and you is an important part of documenting the love and memories in years to come.

  • What is your pricing structure?

Package prices are worked out on time for shooting and editing, plus the cost of printing and framing for the signature and premium packages. All packages include 5 edited photographs as standard. If you would like to buy additional photographs these are priced at £90 each. A travel supplement for locations outside of a 30 mile radius of Leeds will also be payable and this will be agreed up front.

    There are no ‘hidden’ costs.

  • What if the weather is bad? Do you have a rescheduling policy?

Believe it or not, the last thing we want on this kind of lit shoot is a hot, bright, sunny day! Flat lighting, or golden hour lighting is much preferred, which is why we might sometimes arrange evening shoots.

If the weather is completely unworkable on the day of your shoot, we’ll reschedule at no extra cost. If we need to reschedule and you decide not to go ahead, or if you cancel before the shoot, you will forfeit your deposit.

  • Can we request a specific location for our shoot?

Absolutely, yes yes yes. Many people have a favourite or special place where they’d like their snaps to be taken, and as long as there are no restrictions to photographing there - which we will check - then this is a lovely option. Please let us know if you have a particular location in mind when you contact us.

  • What is a typical turnaround time for receiving our photographs?

We aim to have your gallery up and running within 7 working days of your shoot date. Once you have made your selections, the photos will be yours to download within 24 hours.

For the signature and premium packages it can take upto 3 weeks to receive your finished product. This is because everything is made specifically to order. Framed prints will be shipped to you by courier.

  • Can we order prints or albums directly from you?

Framed prints are included in the price for signature and premium packages.

    We don’t currently offer albums.

  • Is it possible to order digital copies of the photos?

All packages include 5 digital images, chosen by you from your online gallery. If you’d like to buy additional images, these are priced at £60 each.

  • Are our photographs protected by copyright?

When you buy your digital photographs, you have the right to reproduce them for printing and sharing them online (including using them on gifts and in photobooks etc).

As the photographer the copyright stays with A Northern Heart, so all we ask is that you do not digitally alter them in any way.

  • How far in advance should I book?

If you have a date in mind, check up front to see if it’s free and if it’s a green light we can book you in. If you don’t have a specific date in mind then we can arrange the best time between us depending on the time of year etc. Its a good idea to leave six weeks as a guide, but worth checking to see if we can schedule a date sooner.

  • How will we receive the final photographs?

Your digital images will be delivered to you by email with a link to download them directly to your own laptop / tablet.

Printed products will be sent to your address via courier.

  • How many people are in the photography team?

At the shoot there will be myself and a lighting assistant.

  • How much experience do you have?

I have been taking photographs professionally for over 10 years, so consider myself pretty experienced.

  • What areas do you cover?

Although I primarily work inYorkshire, I’m happy to travel further afield. A small fee may apply for locations outside of Yorkshire - drop me a line if you would like to discuss this.

  • I'm a business / brand owner who would like some publicity shots. Could a NH portrait work for me?

If you are a canine or equine brand then yes absolutely. We would work together to figure out what you want to portray and take it from there.

  • How do the deposit and payments work?

When you book your session, a percentage of the fee is a non-returnable deposit. Please see the individual package pages for details.

If you would like to pay for your photography in instalments, please use the Clearpay option at checkout.

  • What should we wear?

For a classic look, we recommend plain, complementary colours appropriate to the location and landscape.

When it comes to your dog or horse, I ask that you keep them as ‘naked’ as possible - so no harnesses and we’ll swap the collar and lead for a rope lead that can be easily edited out afterwards.

Its worth bearing in mind the weather / season - if its a cold autumnal day then just a shirt is going to leave you freezing and that’s how you will look in the finished product. Have a think about what is practical for the temperature / location but also looks good. Thinking through your outfits in advance will give you the best results. Google and Pinterest are your friends on this one.

  • Can we do an indoor shoot?

Not at the moment. Our ethos is very much about getting out and about into northern places, as we think the locations plays an important part in the overall photographs.
