An Afternoon with a Bedlington Terrier at Skipwith Common

Bedlington Terriers are one of my favourite dog breeds, both in personality and to photograph. They look like soft little lambs that ought to be sitting on velvet cushions eating cucumber sandwiches, but underneath there’s a terrier brain ticking away. Fast, determined, clever and more confident than they look, but also sweet and gentler than other terrier breeds. Winnie was an absolute superstar on her shoot, even when the rain started to pour down midway through!

Winnie’s shoot was done at Skipwith Common near York.

Winnie is the third Bedlington I’ve photographed, and much like the others had plenty of personality coupled with a deep affection for her owner, Nicola, who bought Winnie as a 40th birthday present to herself (and says its the best thing she’s ever done). It was a return to Skipwith Common for me too as the first time I shot here it was for a little Dacschund named Rupert. It’s a beautiful space filled with a mix of fields, wide paths and woodland.

As the photos here show, Winnie got wetter and wetter as we worked her photographs at different locations on the Common (we all did!) She also had some photographs with her mum, giving Nicola a lovely record of their bond together.

I’m always happy to shoot at new destinations, so if you have a place you’d love to have photographs with your dog, drop me a line and lets come up with a plan for your keep-forever portraits.
