The Hills are Calling and I Must Go…Baildon Moor Dog Photography

Baildon Moor is something of a local legend round where I live. Ask anyone from the surrounding area and they'll almost certainly have a story connected to it - dog walks, family outings, childhood adventures, Sunday strolls, muddy boots, sledging in winter, sunsets in summer. It holds memories for generations of local people. So when Poppy asked if we could photograph her black Labrador, Moose, at the top of the moor, it was brilliant to do a shoot so near home where I knew the views would deliver.

When people are planning a photoshoot, it's easy to assume that somewhere new or dramatic will automatically make the best location. But over the years I've discovered that the most meaningful photographs are often created in places that already hold significance - the places where you walk your dog every week. the paths where they race ahead (ears flying in the wind), and the viewpoint where you always stop to admire the scenery (Baildon has a very famous one - the top trig point).

These are places where you've watched the seasons change together year after year, and they become part of your story, giving even more meaning to your keep-forever portrait and the legacy it will carry. Dogs are often far more relaxed in familiar surroundings too. They know the smells, the routes and the terrain. Instead of worrying about an unfamiliar environment, they can simply enjoy themselves, which often results in photographs that feel natural, authentic and full of personality.

Baildon Moor is particularly wonderful for this. It offers a little bit of everything - sweeping Yorkshire views, dramatic rock formations, open heather moorland and beautiful light that changes by the minute. Whether the sky is filled with golden sunshine or moody clouds, it always seems to provide a stunning backdrop, and for those of us that know and love it, it has its own distinct feel too. Over the years I have stood at the top of the Moor with a camera in snow drifts, torrential storms and under burning orange skies!

If you live near Baildon Moor or the surrounding areas and would love to have a photoshoot here, get in touch. As you can see from Moose’s shots, there are plenty of viewpoints and areas we can use to give your images a wild and cinematic feel that will stand the test of time.
